The Diesel Society: Seekers of Futures Past

There are some who strongly object to Adelian ideology and traditions, regarding society, technology and much more. They believe technology should not be something feared, but fostered, and everyone should be willing to sacrifice for the development of greater technology. Worship and ritual should be discarded, in their eyes, as it is a useless protection, which magic and technology do not require. Rural tradition is stagnant, and industrialization and efficient labor placement would benefit all. From scraps of the Lost World’s lore came the ideals of the steam and fuel-driven Diesel Society, for whom total scientific efficiency should be acquired at all costs – technology is an end unto itself.

Duel Masters Coming Back?

Wizard’s of the Coast and Hasbro released a Press Release today which I will not post or excerpt because it takes up too much space, but which you can read here. If you want to. I’ll give the finer points and some storytime right here. I played a lot of Duel Masters back when it was released. There’s the meme among people that Dennis hates tabletop games – he’s criticized practically every game under the sun, including the vaunted D&D (all kinds) and indie storygames, and yet he plays things like Dark Heresy, Maid: RPG and Sword Girls. Well you can add Duel Masters to that “list of things Dennis doesn’t hate for some reason.” In fact I REALLY like Duel Masters. However, given its previous history I have some cause for trepidation…

Reviewing At Critical-Hits

Today I’ve got a review up at Critical Hits for Rogue Trader: Hostile Acquisitions. It’s a fairly long and detailed review in my usual way. I’ll be joining the fine folks at Critical-Hits henceforth, reviewing stuff over at their site. I think this is a handy arrangement, since it lets me focus more on what this blog is about, which is worldbuilding, homebrew and the World of Adel, while still getting to air my thoughts on RPGs. I’ll be reviewing all kinds of stuff, but if you have any suggestions, or products you’d like to see reviewed (that, hopefully, are actually on sale, preferably at DriveThruRPG and RPGNow, where I get my stuff), email me, or send me a note on Twitter (@WyattSalazar), or leave a comment in one of my reviews.

Dungeons of Adel: The Hellmouth

One of the Arch-Dungeons of Adel, the Hellmouth is a member of a family of massive, seemingly living spaces that exist beneath each Nation of Adel (and the Abyss Isle and Noshiki), their exact positions shifting, shrinking and growing as they are sealed or “destroyed” and thereby forced dormant, until such a time as their evil can resurface months or (if lucky) years away. Each Archdungeon is a piece of the Lost World so foul that it continues like a cancer within the land, spawning corrupted presences, and endangering the population as its tendrils rise to the surface, opening new entrances.  Their size, shape and what a brave and foolish soul may discover within will vary greatly each time the dungeon resurfaces.

The Hellmouth is the “iconic” dungeon of the Republic of Andaliel, dubious as that honor is. The Andalians believe themselves masters of their land, building their vast and great capital of Oomash within a vast hollowed-out circle in the cold Hetuku Mountain, and taming the lush Southland that is the fertile and beautiful breadbasket of their nation. This is not mere hubris – they understand their relationship with the land, and they care for it. But the Hellmouth still seeks to punish them for their accomplishments. Heralded by the rising of entrances that seem like toothed maws, the Hellmouth is a living corruption of the element of Earth, one of the cardinal elements in the Adelian Wheel of Life. Read on for more details of this cursed place.

Review: Deathwatch First Founding

First Founding is a product for Fantasy Flight Games’ Deathwatch line of Warhammer 40,000 RPGs. This product can be found online for $20 and I received it for free as part of a Featured Reviewer program. Like all Deathwatch supplements it focuses on the Space Marines. First Founding was perhaps designed to allay a common complaint among Warhammer 40k fans, that Deathwatch did not include enough of the classic Space Marine chapters for prospective players to use when building their characters. First Founding includes Chapter advancement tables and powers for the First Founding chapters not covered in the original Deathwatch: the Iron Hands, Salamanders, Raven Guard and White Scars. It also includes new stuff for the previously introduced chapters, the Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves and Imperial Fists.

Sword Girls Closed Beta Review

Where the magic begins...

I recently got a closed beta key for Sword Girls, a anime-themed online card game with many RPG and social game elements. While Sword Girls is not Magic: The Gathering, it is a fairly accessible and frenetic game which makes unique use of the fact that it is an online card game – it can essentially make use of video game conceits that RPG gamers are well aware of, like the brutal RNG (random number generator) upon which hang certain decisions. And yet it maintains a good element of strategic play and the card balance is not bad (and if it is, perhaps the random elements will make it difficult for your to notice).
