For the past few weeks I’ve struggled to think about what to write for this blog about RPGs that isn’t just another progress report on Uttarakuru (Progress Report: We’re on track, and I’ve drafted about 35 pages of Setting material and 45 power cards since we last spoke). I’ve mostly discovered that RPGs just aren’t as big a part of my life as they were when I started this blog and set its mission statement.
Sure I still play them, and I’m developing my own RPG game! I’ve not fallen out of love with RPGs – in fact I’ve fallen in love with some new stuff like Dungeon World and Last Stand as D&D more thoroughly disinterests me every day. However, I’ve found myself with little to say about both games. They’re well designed and never really provoked much introspection from me. I can play them taking their rules entirely at face value and have a great time. Normally when I blog it’s to tweak something, or add something, or change something in the game – I don’t need to with those.
But I’ve also got so many other hobbies that I’m engaging with on a more frequent basis than the RPG campaign, and that I’d be just as excited to talk about. So I’m going to shift gears and try to make this blog and overall hub for my blogging about my hobbies, as inspiration strikes me to talk. There’s been times in the past where I’d really have liked to talk about something, but thought “I can’t connect this to RPGs, so it’s not gonna go on The Spirits of Eden.” I’ve tried to find other avenues for this, but ultimately, this place is my house on the internet – and I’m gonna decorate it how I like.
As I said before I love prose writing – I’d like to publish some novel ideas I’ve got some day, in fact. I’m a big fan of video games (particularly PC shooters, RPGs and weird japanese indie games such as Carpe Fulgur’s lineup), and I try to play many of the “big hit” PC games that come out. I like anime and manga, though I don’t watch as much anime as I used to, but I’ve always got something to say about that too. I’m a bisexual puertorican, and I feel strong empathy toward minority experiences and LGBT issues, both those that I’ve experienced and those that I can only watch with mute grief (such as the current ugly streak of hyper-public “nerd” misogyny online). So I might have something to say about my life, and the lives of others, through that lens on this blog, as well. Hopefully you’ll stick around. If I ever write about RPGs it’ll have an RPG tag.
I welcome you to follow me on Twitter as well. I’d like to engage with people who may read this blog a bit more from now on, if at all possible. Comments are barely made on this blog, but I talk with people all the time on twitter, and pay it a lot more attention. So if you really don’t wish to comment here, maybe send me a tweet instead!
