DTRPG Christmas In July Sale

Today’s the start of one of the largest sales that the assorted DriveThru sites have during the year, their Christmas In July Sale. The sale lasts through the rest of the week, so you can take your time shopping around. You can shop at DrivethruRPG, DrivethruComics and DrivethruFiction for boatloads of products at a lower price than usual. The links I put there lead directly to the sales products. You can search by publisher or use the search box, or go hunting through the pages. I like to see what’s on sale page by page mostly to acquaint myself with the indie product lines, of which I don’t really know nearly enough until incentivized to look through them by these kinds of sales. If you would like a starting point, you can also check out the products that I’ve reviewed, some of which are part of the sale. The DriveThru sites have always been my go-to for buying RPG PDFs, since they’re reliable to purchase from, keep me apprised of PDF updates, have a huge review culture, as well as having a lot of nice promotions, and they also do some Print-On-Demand stuff as well. Check out the various links above and hopefully you’ll find something worth your while!

  1. Holy crap, that’s a lot of cheap stuff! Just checked out your reviews and saw the FFG W40k stuff. Have you had a look at the Only War eta yet? Sadly, I just don’t have the disposable income at the moment, so have only been able to look at the light rules, and then use the Dark Heresy book of mine to fill in the gaps. http://shortymonster.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/eleventh-hour-an-only-war-play-test/

  2. Yeah, the decision to sell the playtest is kind of weird. I hope to give it a fuller review soon. I’ve not yet fully digested all the rules, but I’ve looked at some key stuff and have been pretty impressed.

I like the idea of having the players generate the supporting cast (their “comrades”) to fill out a full Guard squadron, and I like how those characters are incorporated into combat (comrades don’t take complete actions in the game, but rather their narrative action of “shooting a lasgun” or “helping you reload” have support benefits on the player characters). I also like all the character types you can play. You can throw together an Ogryn, a Commissar, a Techpriest and a Sentinel pilot and it just works out (often violently). The battlefield availability of certain equipment is also a nice touch, alongside building your own regiment and always being assured of its basic capabilities.

As far as differing from Dark Heresy, some of the basic system stuff’s changed *a little bit*. For example, burst shooting has been revised like it was in Black Crusade so that Full Auto Burst gives a Ballistic Penalty instead of giving a +20 Bonus, but the basic attacks give a +5 Bonus to your tests (so there’s an incentive to massed basic attacks). Righteous Fury is more like the Zealous Hatred of Black Crusade than the insane snowballing damage bonuses of DH and DW – it deals a miniature critical hit instead of extra damage.

However, the changes are basically errata as far as I’m concerned, and the basic system plays like it always has, really. The changes you’re missing are really good for gameplay, in my opinion, (righteous fury was pretty crazy and so was burst fire), but not extraordinary.

Overall I’m pretty impressed with how FFG manages to make mechanics for basic stuff like equipment or character creation that evokes the feel of the specific game premise so well.
