Important Things To Be Said

There’s a couple of things I wanted to clear up just so we’re all on the same page here. I think it’s important to be open about how I’m going about this blog and writing in general. This is something I must say.

I said yesterday over twitter that I would be erasing a bunch of posts on this blog. As of right now I’ve deleted 180 of them. The vast overwhelming majority of these posts had nothing in them just so you know – they were old, bad metaposts, link spam, traffic bait, and other worthlessness that I had been intending to excise for the longest time. But! There were actual content posts I deleted. Here’s why: they were awful. The posts I deleted either contained casual misogyny, were full of worthless profanity or bigoted language or were cheap call-outs of some kind that served no use. And I only deleted the ones that were up and down impossible to turn around. Now I’m going to go back and edit other articles to remove similar cruft out of them. This is not something I’m doing on a whim now, it’s something I would eventually do. This is necessary.

Contest: Read This Blog, Win 10bux

It’s time again for a blog contest. You could win a glorious $10 in RPGNow/DrivethruRPG credit, and buy whatever product you want with that sweet sweet digital lucre, just by reading this blog and commenting.

To enter, simply post a comment to this post with your name and a valid email address that you actually check, and can check within the period this contest will be open for – this is important because otherwise I can’t send you the link.

In the body of the comment you will write below, write me a little helpful bit about an article you read on this blog within the past two or three months (since July) and what you thought about it. The only stipulation is that you not comment on a meta-article, where I talk about the blog’s schedule changes or something. It has to be actual content – in all likelihood it will be tagged “Spirits of Eden” or “Expedition” and you will know it’s actual content.

The contest will be open until next Friday, October 7. I will randomly select one eligible commenter. I won’t actually look at your names when I do – I’ll probably pull them out of a hat without looking. The “eligible” thing is just if you posted a comment with a valid email address and an actual comment in the body.

In addition, anyone can enter the code “DiceInTheFall” to get 20% off the following products:

Winter Is Coming (Just Came)

I had a lot of fun writing Dark Winter (and The Silver Lance) and I’m happy others have read and enjoyed it as well. Yet the very reason you got Dark Winter was because of an RPG festival hosted by T.W. Wombat over at Wombat’s Gaming Den of Iniquity, a fact I forgot to mention beforehand! The site is playing host to a variety of winter-themed articles and article links that could use your patronage and feedback. You can check out the main Winter Is Coming page here, and give feedback to T.W. Wombat as well as the individual authors of articles you liked right here. Hopefully in the future we’ll see more themed blog festivals from T.W. Wombat, which may give me more opportunities to write new adventure stuff and other things for World of Adel in various flavors.

When I heard about it I thought it was a wonderful idea. There are a few other themed RPG “festivals” around as well, like the RPG Blog Carnival, the current incarnation of which is about Assassins, though that’s about to end now I think, and I wouldn’t really know what to say about that currently. I might participate in the next one depending on the theme. After participating in Winter Is Coming I’d like to be more on the ball about writing for these themed blog events because it helps me think about areas of the setting I haven’t touched before.

Expedition Beta: The Equipment Section

In Expedition, a lot of the equipment is just rolled into the Expedition Points system. You don’t tally up how much lantern oil and ropes you bought because this isn’t Link: The Faces of Evil. But I wanted to make other types of items more distinct. To that end, I set about expanding some other areas of the equipment section. In the previous version, a Weapon gave you a damage bonus or an attack roll bonus depending on its size and the kind of weapon it was, and it also gave you options during a damaging attack. In the latest version, attack roll bonuses are basically pointless, and I’ve done away with the old model for handling a weapon’s stats.

I did this mostly because the idea of “damaging attack options” confused a lot of people. In fact looking back on it, I was sometimes confused myself as to the timing of these abilities and that’s not good. Let’s do a comparison of what a weapon used to look like in the alpha, and what they will look like in the beta, and talk a bit about it.

Dark Winter (Adventure Aid)

When the ice comes, homes close, and life fades, for a time, hoping for spring to renew it. This provides a unique opportunity to those with discerning eyes and unscrupulous motives. Those who brave the cold will find their secrets well kept until the snows thaw. And if the snows never thaw, then their spoils can remain forever hidden.

Dark Winter is a scenario, development and a series of play ideas for a GM to use and adapt as he or she wishes. While focused on this blog’s theme (The world of the Spirits of Eden, Adel), it can be played in any setting and with any game system you prefer. At the end there will be a section to convert the scenario to a more generic game setting fit for fantasy titles like D&D, Pathfinder and retroclones, as well as RPGs like GURPS, Savage Worlds and indie titles.

The Silver Lance (Adventure Aid)

Ruins of the old world lay scattered far and wide, and many times they contain things best left forgotten. Ancient weaponry is often highly sought after by the unscrupulous, and almost always found by the unwary innocent. While one might think such devices can be purified, can be made holy in the eyes of the spirit and again put to use serving the people, many times they are fit only for a cleansing pyre. But enemies lustful for old, locked-away powers are always on the hunt for new weaponry.

The Silver Lance is a scenario idea and an outline for play. There will be blanks which the GM should fill in to adapt and complete the scenario into a full game in his or her preferred style of play. While the scenario will assume many things about the game setting (specifically talking about this blog’s focus, The World of Adel), it is intended that the GM can adapt the ideas here to his or her game. At the end there will be a section to convert the scenario to a more generic game setting fit for fantasy titles like D&D, Fantasycraft, and D&D retroclones. Generic RPGs like GURPS should have no problems as well.

Feedback on the format and content of the posts is appreciated, so they might continue and get better. You can scroll to the bottom of the post where I ask for feedback and explain some things. It would be quite helpful!
