Copper Coins! New Alpha Fighter

I’ve already revised how character classes “look” like 3 times. Part of the issue is that I want them to be eminently playable, without actually needing to buy Perks. At first I tried to do this by giving them Starting Perks, but that left a bad taste in my mouth. I think the class itself should be playable without even needing to touch Perks at all just yet. If you wanted to you should just be able to read the class, write down your class stuff and buy equipment and then set off to play. So I decided instead to have each class award a few combat talents and a few traits. These, compared to Perks, are not great. But they’re not meant to, because they’re free. Perks cost character points. However, they make the character completely playable and interesting without needing to buy Perks. There is still the option of the GM awarding starting Character Points with which to buy a few Perks, but I want it to be just that – optional.

Names of the abilities are subject to change. They currently have this sort of accidentally hilarious Soviet theme to them because those are literally the first things that popped into my head. Without further ado:

Fighter Talents

•Vanguard: You have a +1 bonus to Strike rolls against any enemy that successfully dealt damage to one of your allies during its last turn.

Defender: The Fighter gains 1 Edge whenever an enemy misses an attack roll against it or against one of its allies while suffering from a condition or penalty inflicted by the Fighter. This Talent is inactive while the Fighter has 1 or more Edge.

Iron Curtain: The Fighter can use the following talent with any attack action.
1 Edge: +1 Attack, +1 Damage. The target has a -1 penalty to attack rolls and damage against your allies for 1 round.
2 Edge: +2 Attack, +1 Damage. The target has a -2 penalty to attack rolls and damage against your allies for 1 round.
3 Edge: +2 Attack, +2 Damage. The target has a -2 penalty to attack rolls and damage against your allies for 2 rounds.

Fighter Traits

•Wanderer: A Fighter has traveled before and knows something of other cultures. A Fighter reduces by 2 any difficulty on interaction caused by a cultural barrier.

•Find the Path: A Fighter has a +2 bonus to checks made to navigate or find his or her way toward major or minor landmarks.

Comrades: The Fighter can uncover a relation of some kind regardless of the location. The Fighter’s connection to this person can be leveraged, giving the Fighter a +2 bonus to Persuasion rolls with him or her. This person can offer some aid or accompany the characters (he or she consumes Expedition Points like a normal character). This ability can be used once per Expedition.

  1. Very nice! I like how these abilities are very cleanly set out, showing the key character points of the class. (The “friends in all places” feature adds a lot to the “wandering” archetype.)

  2. Thank you. I will explain a bit more about it in a future post too, so everyone can know what all the 40M and such is.
