The Divine Defender I (Fiction)

Kaleen Yweh (I)

Dear Father– Esteemed Gove– To Whom This May Concern

My name is Kaleen Yweh. I am a Seraphim residing in the Convent of Saint Abeni’s Mercy in the province of Bhisho, in your province. I would not write to you directly, most esteemed officer of the Queen’s law, without due cause. I seek no grievance and require no bribe. I wish only for acknowledgment. This letter may grow lengthy, and you may grow wearied by it, but for the sake of my late mother, I would wish–

Relationships

In this article I want to talk about the Relationship system for Copper Coins! and how it is changing in the next revision. Furthermore, it might hopefully give you some ideas for your own game – given that the system itself is actually pretty portable.

There was a lot of surprise (and some indifference) expressed toward the “secret mechanic” of Copper Coins! when it was released. Relationship Points were points a character (any character) could tag any other character with. They came with some mild benefits, the most important of which was that you got extra XP for roleplaying with people you gave relationship points to. But the section was sort of convoluted in that you had to track what characters gave you points back, and stuff like that. I’ll be changing that.

Classic Monsters In Eden 2: Golems

In the last article, I looked at what Vampires (and liches) were like in Eden. Today we’ll look at Golems. Classically, the Golem is a being created by people, out of mud. There are varying legends about them, such as their inability to speak, and the incredible imperfection they carry due to being creations of Humans rather than Gods. There’s the story of the Golem of Prague that was used to defend the jews. In The Spirits of Eden campaign setting, Golems are magical creations often intended for labor – or to provide hardpoints for putting a battering ram or other large weapon.

New Copper Coins! Magic System

I’m thinking of making a somewhat more expansive system of Copper Coins! magic, still retaining the same talent-like format as before, but fitting in better with the fact that Drama Points now exist, Recovery is gone, but that I still want to use components. Also to differentiate them a bit from how talents work now and give them a bit more bang. I’m gonna run the idea past you, and see what you think. This system would be four-fold: Spells would be divided into Hexes, Charms, Rituals and Solutions. They would use the same blocks, but the keywords Hex, Charm, Ritual and Solution would imply different information that could be kept separate from the blocks, to tighten them up.

Changes And Plans

I should have awaited some more feedback, but I figure there’s no harm in it, and so have begun to write out a revision of Copper Coins! with the four-level system and Drama Points system implemented. Other general stuff will be cleaned up, and I am looking to reduce the page footprint a bit if possible – but if it means losing what I consider to be important or interesting content, you’ll get another 230+ pager. The only feedback I really got on these ideas was Andy’s from playersideblog, so I figure then that most of you are willing to ride along with whatever I decide. Thank you Andy for your comment.

Let’s look at some the changes by showing a current Copper Coins! talent and a talent in the new format. They’re both the same talent, but under two different systems.

The Adelian Arsenal (CC! Rules)

The Armies of the Spirits of Eden have access to a variety of weapons and equipment. The military-grade equipment in Eden is also available to adventurers who have the money to buy them – or the luck to find them lying around. The basic melee weapons of the adelians are swords, spears, maces and axes as usual; while their uncommon ranged weapons are varieties of shotwands and shotstaves. In this article we’ll look at the uncommon ranged weapons of the Adelians. There are competing varieties of the same weapons, from two different major arms manufacturers: Elster-Klaus in Andaliel, Kalim in Vedaria. The Seraphim in Sargasso also produce their weapons – by extension, the Furies have those.

The weapons in this article replace the Shotwand and Shotstaff in the Copper Coins! rulebook with numerous variations, some more powerful, some less, some more expensive, some less. They also add a variety of new weapons. All of the other weapons except the Shotwand and the Shotstaff are used as-is.
