Homebrew Skill Rituals Part 1

A while back I decided some of the stuff about rituals just bugs me and I can’t really help it, much the same time I found out that treasure parcels bug me as well. It’s just that the idea of keeping up with the WBL has always felt fiddly to me. Back in 3.5 it was a pain making sure PCs always had the money they were “supposed” to have all the time. I’m always looking for ways to fix that.

Worldly Wanderers: Companion NPCs I

I always love the idea of having NPCs that hang around with the PCs. The PCs will always have a dynamic among each other, but throwing an NPC in there can really change the situation. What’s more, if you’re low on PCs (as I often am) using an NPC companion can help you to rectify the numbers. With that in my mind, I decided to start writing a bunch of NPC companions. I also decided I might as well share them, so I’ll strip them of most of the in-depth fluff I made, give a simple, generic description and the stats. I’ll probably do these two or three at a time; average one humanoid, one monster.

Nevermet Press’ “The Desire” On Sale!

The Desire is Nevermet Press’ first content cycle, cleaned up and put into a PDF with all sorts of specials. The design philosophy (or one can say, lack thereof) for this cycle was to create a central character and let numerous authors have a go at her and interpret her in different ways. The PDF is primarily geared towards 4e, but it shouldn’t be difficult to fit the content to your fantasy game of choice. In fact for D&D 3.5 it’s rather simple to just have The Desire be a 10th level Sorceress, with access to Dominate Person (a 5th level spell), Charm Person and Charm Monster (1st and 4th level spells respectively).

For $9.95 you get stats for the Desire (go me!) and some subordinates (the Deadly Nymph and two minions at the start were also my joyous handiwork!); a guide to the grand city of Highcourt, including a lovely map by Paul King; three encounters for D&D 4th Edition, including more new creatures and traps; a number of organizations to use in a game based around The Desire; and even a smidgen of player content. The encounters include maps, and there is also some nice artwork by Danny Rupp, Rob Torno and much more! There’s also a (save ends) encounter power in one of the player options but we can forgive. Call now, and we’ll double your order, giving you a printer friendly version ABSOLUTELY FREE. You should also check out Twitter and Facebook for CRAZY JON’S CRAZY DEALS man that Jacobs fellow is INSANE.

So if you ever thought “man that Wyatt is such a nice guy, I wish I could buy him a beer” then know that I don’t drink, but if you want to buy me a soft drink, you can buy this book, and that will get me enough for that soft drink. And maybe some chips.

Review: Azagar’s Book of Rituals

Rituals are like the red-headed stepchild of the 4e powers system. Powers instantly maim your foes, cause you to leap high, teleport, fly, among other things, all at the quick behest of your combat actions, standard, minor, move, instantaneous, hassle-free. Rituals can drain your coffers, healing surges and schedule to open a door! At least, WOTC’s rituals do. They are often overcosted and take too long for too little benefit. All too often you see rituals that take several minutes to cast for a very fleeting benefit, such as having loads of str for a single non-attack check, among other things.

Enter Goodman Game’s Azagar’s Book of Rituals, which I got for free for review purposes because I’m e-famous. Glinting teeth, shining smile, smug face. Thus fully disclosed we can begin the review.

Tips For Self-Respecting Monster Mashers

This is an interlude to my Monster Manual II review posts to talk about some of the essential things that 4e parties with ambitions of cleaving through the new monster manual should possess in order to make it effectively out of the jowls of demise and claim the golden goblet of victory. Or something like that.

This post was inspired by a tweet by the Chatty DM, wherein he joked that against a party of Defenders, you should use fliers and dragons that never land, if you’re a bad DM. I jokingly replied that some Defenders could teleport up and use a prone-causing attack to knock them down.
